We are back. Eleven days, five ports, four people, one Inside Passage. Ovation of the Seas returned to Vancouver on June 7th and we were home in North Carolina by the 8th. The Alaska coastline is exactly as dramatic as the photographs suggest and considerably colder than the photographs communicate. Safety Officer Ben logged every significant observation against the framework we built across ten issues of this column. Here is the debrief.
The honest version of an after-action review requires distinguishing between three categories: what worked as designed, what required adjustment in the field, and what the framework missed entirely. All three are useful. The third category is the most useful.
The framework verdict by category
Automatic-deployment PFDs worn by every family member on every water excursion without exception. Two moments on the trip — a choppy Zodiac approach near a glacier and a swell-affected tender boarding — where I was grateful for the non-negotiable standard. Neither became an incident. That is the goal.
The kit organized around injury categories rather than a generic first-aid template held up across the full eleven days. Wound management for a minor galley laceration on day four was efficient because the relevant supplies were in a labeled section, not at the bottom of a bag. The organization was the preparation.
The system worked for three of four people. My youngest daughter ran significantly warmer than planned and was shedding her mid layer within the first hour of most excursions. The lesson: thermoregulation planning for a 16-year-old is genuinely different from planning for someone in their fifties. Build more flexibility into the system than you think you need.
The environment-specific approach was correct. What required field adjustment was the transition protocol between environments — moving from a wet vessel deck to a rocky river approach in Hoonah required a shoe change that we had not built enough time into the schedule for. Logistics matter as much as equipment selection.
Wind, spray, and engine noise on a small vessel make verbal communication unreliable in a way that is genuinely difficult to appreciate until you are in it. Our communication protocol was sound on paper and required modification in the field to incorporate hand signals for situations where voice was not cutting through. The update I am carrying forward: every safety communication protocol needs a non-verbal backup.

What the Inside Passage actually taught us
The most significant lesson from eleven days in Alaska was not a safety lesson. It was a decision-making lesson. Multi-day expeditions in physically and cognitively demanding environments accumulate fatigue in ways that affect judgment at a rate that is not obvious in the moment. By day eight, the threshold for what felt like an acceptable level of risk in a water excursion had shifted from day one — not dramatically, but measurably. The pre-committed rule — if the Safety Officer says we are done for the day, that conversation is over — had to be invoked twice. Both times it was correct.
The framework going forward for the offshore work out of Lockwood Folly Inlet incorporates these lessons directly. The communication protocol now has explicit hand signals for the four most important on-water situations. The layering system is documented per person rather than as a family standard. The pre-commitment to turn-back criteria has been formalized into a written pre-departure checklist rather than a mental exercise. The field improved the paper, which is the entire point of doing the field.
